If you are interested in art your first stop should be at the National Art Gallery. The art gallery is located in the historic colonial house Villa Doyle and the views from the upper balconies towards the city and the sea are magnificent. The ground floor is the permanent exhibition space while the upper floor has two temporary exhibition spaces with revolving displays. The art captures the history of Bahamas and Bahamian life through the artwork of Bahamian artists. Many artworks reflect the struggle of Bahamians to shape up their lives in the post-colonial years after Bahamas became independent. Another theme is the dark days of slavery. There are several sculptures outside in the garden as well as wonderful murals that you can see from outside. You can easily spend an hour at the gallery exploring Bahamian fine art.
